STYLE GURU STYLE: Edged Up Florals

Spring has sprung and with it, comes the go-to trend of wearing florals. Nothing says spring fashion more than a floral print sundress, no? While spring florals are always synonymous with a girly, dainty look, fashion has proven time and time again that anything can be changed up. Known for its edgy, off-beat aesthetic, Marni channeled this when it included florals in its resort 2015 collection.

As a whole, the Marni resort 2015 show featured sporty silhouettes, done in staple solids with pops of color—befitting a more casual, resort collection. While resort or cruise collections tend to bring about images of floaty, chiffon numbers and florals against neutral or light colored fabrics, Marni stuck to its core and toughened florals up by pairing it with dark navy. In a world where I think the most stylish looks are ones that play with contrast, I loved the idea of mixing florals with edge and decided to try the look for myself.

Feeding off the gloomy spring day, I stuck to my usual monotonous look of a white cropped top, black bodycon skirt and tights to keep me warm. Rainy weather calls for rain boots, but wanting to add a touch of grunge while still keeping my feet dry, I threw on my trusty Dr. Martens.

What would otherwise be a very monochromatic outfit, I mimicked the Marni look by adding on a navy floral print satin jacket. Just like most girls, I love these prints but what really drew me to this piece was how versatile yet classic it looked. Also, the fact that it’s made of satin makes it great to wear year-round; it is a good tip to keep in mind when shopping—pieces you can wear, regardless of the season.

Finally, to add a touch of glamour and keep the look modern, I accessorised with a gold rhinestone statement necklace and a gold cuff, showing that you really can make florals edgy, current and cool.

Get My Look: 1. A dark floral jacket. 2. A gold cuff. 3. Dr. Martens.
