STYLE GURU STYLE: Dream Of The ’90s

It took me a while to get into the ‘90s trend. For the past few years I was just too much into the whole ‘70s bohemian vibe. Don’t get me wrong, I still love channeling my inner flower power. But sometimes I just want to go for a casual, grunge look. Now I am obsessed with ‘90s-inspired pieces. Overalls, flannel, Converse, dark lipstick—I want them all.

Therefore, I was loving the 3.1 Phillip Lim fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. The collection featured flannels, maxi dresses and leather, and a dark color scheme gave an overall grungy atmosphere.

I decided to take inspiration from this show by wearing a Forever 21 midi dress in red plaid. I like how the lighter colors in the dress are perfect for spring and summer. It’s also very versatile: I can wear it buttoned as a dress or wear it open over a tank top and distressed shorts. I’ll admit this dress is not the most flattering, as it is a bit shapeless. But I really enjoy loose clothing, so I don’t mind.

Because the arm holes are loose, I’m wearing a black bralette underneath. I’m keeping the accessories simple with a long, crystal pendant, as I think the dress is already enough of a statement. Some black sandals complete the look.

Flannel is probably my favorite trend of the ‘90s. It can be soft and girly in a light color or with a dress or skirt, or it can be toughened up with leather and dark lipstick. Flannel looks cool as a pattern on any article of clothing, from skirts to dresses to pants. It can be styled to match your own look to make it unique.

Get My Look: 1. A flannel dress. 2. A long necklace. 3. Black sandals.
