STYLE GURU STYLE: Combat-Chic

Margaret Mead once said, “I do not believe in using women in combat, because females are too fierce.” Donatella Versace had a similar concept in mind when creating the Versace spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection. The combat appearance came to life from wanting a challenge to design something strong. Versace utilized a bold camouflage pattern in multiple pieces and focused on tailored items for other looks.

The combat style can be very intimidating to some, with the two common features being a camouflage pattern and structured look. In order to modify the runway’s combat style for a more wearable look, I opted for a subtle camouflage pattern that is less bold compared to Versace’s. I paired my pants with a moto jacket that adds structure for a tailored look that is still as strong and bold as the runway. My Vans slip-ons complemented the jacket and added an edgy, yet laid back vibe. The last item I added was a small, structured black bag. This piece is perfect for those of you on the go, as the different strap options make it super versatile and convenient.

For you Fashionistas that want to take a step further, makeup choices can enhance this combat look. For a fierce look, pair a winged liner with bronzed cheeks and a dark lip. To recreate the more natural and casual looks seen on the runway, simply apply a peach-colored blush and a nude lip color. I chose to go for a look somewhere in between, combining a neutral eyelid, peachy cheeks and a bolder lip color.

These pieces can easily be worn separately in order to create other outfits with the same edgy, chic vibe. Who knows, the camouflage print may become the next neutral.
