STYLE GURU BIO: Thando Mlambo

The scene is Florence, Italy. The dates are January 12-15, 2016. The event is Pitti Uomo, arguably the most important platform for men’s fashion collections in the world. Pitti Uomo brings together the best of men’s clothing and accessory designers, models, photographers and fashion lovers alike to the same location for a few days. While the trade show and other Pitti-related events are the places to be seen, blogs and magazines can attest that it is the street style of the sartorially-exquisite walking the already scenic streets of Florence that is most impressive!

Ever since I can remember, I have loved men’s fashion. It probably has to do with the fact that I have two brothers—the youngest whose outfits I would style and force to wear. He is older now, living in Zimbabwe where I’m from and I, in my senior year at Barnard College in New York City still “suggest” outfits for him to sport. Ah, family.

Pitti Uomo is possibly one of the most exciting four days for me because I get to see what’s new (or not) in men’s fashion, both in the various designer collections, but also on the street. For instance, it’s always a feast for the eyes and soul to see what Alessandro Squarzi, Nick Wooster and Art Comes First/Avec Ces Freres (ACF) designers Shaka Maidoh and Sam Lambert are wearing. Who are these exquisitely dressed men? The answer is start following Pitti and other men’s fashion weeks and you will know who they are.

This outfit is wholly inspired by Pitti Uomo with its sporty and rugged albeit polished and put-together look. I’m really interested in my personal style telling a story: whether it’s because certain pieces come from different parts of the world, or making a certain color stand out. In this outfit, it’s the red scarf from Tokyo and socks from ASOS. I’m also all about my #SockGame and enjoy the interplay of the playful plaid socks with the delicate florals of the scarf.
