STYLE GURU BIO: Tejya Johnson

Hi Fashionistas/os!

My name is Tejya Johnson, and I am a sophomore at Widener University outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I’m a dual marketing and environmental studies major, and I plan to work on rebranding companies (specifically retail) to be more environmentally conscious. I love both my school and hometown and I’m super excited to be able to show off all my incredibly stylish friends.

Fashion and beauty have both always been close to my heart, and I began sewing when I was only 10. I started off making dresses patterned from items I already owned with the help of my mom. As I entered high school, I enrolled in the fashion industries program in my local vocational school and expanded on my sewing and fashion knowledge even more. I graduated from the fashion program with nearly a dozen awards for pieces I’d created, and a great sense of how I wanted my college experience and career to pan out. Years later, I’m now learning more and more about the business aspects of the fashion industry. Although I’ve strayed away from the design and textile aspects of it, I hope to make a positive change towards sustainability and safe working conditions within the fashion industry, and I can’t wait to see where my future career takes me.

My personal style is very laid back—between classes, work, and my extracurriculars—I like to have pieces that are comfy and easy to throw on, but still leave me looking put together. Although Widener is a fairly small university, there’s so many different cultures and backgrounds mixed together so it’s easy to draw inspiration from my peers. I love patterns and colors, and anything I can mix and match together is a huge bonus. My go to summer piece is any T-shirt or A-line dress; I have them in nearly a dozen different colors and I love dressing them up with flashy jewelry or down with a baseball hat and vans. I’m a big proponent of spring cleaning—I’m always going through my closet and getting rid of things (mainly so I have an excuse to go shopping for more). I believe that clothing and personal style can be a huge motivator for being productive and social. Personally, I’m a lot more inclined to go out and make plans when I know I get to wear something fun and bold.

So enjoy my posts fellow Fashionistas! I hope I can give you all some inspiration for an upcoming events you all have going on the next couple of months.
