STYLE GURU BIO: Taylor Hempstead

Hi everyone! My name is Taylor Hempstead as you can obviously tell from my profile and I am so excited to be writing for CollegeFashionista this summer. I am now a junior at Marist College (boy, does time fly) and I am majoring in fashion merchandising with a minor in either business or communications; I havenโ€™t decided which yet.

Interesting enough, I used to call myself a failed fashion major, not because I wasnโ€™t doing well in classes or because I wasnโ€™t fashionable, but because I didnโ€™t think I fit into the fashion major reputation. As college progressed I figured out, I donโ€™t have to! Thatโ€™s what makes fashion so interesting. I donโ€™t dress up for class all the time; hell if I want to wear leggings and the T-shirt I slept in the night before, I will. I would much rather wear comfortable shoes (preferably Converse All-Stars or Dr. Martens) than heels and I donโ€™t always like looking like Iโ€™ve got my whole life figured out because, to be honest, I donโ€™t.

I can say though that I have more black pieces of clothing in my closet than a 1980s punk band. The amount of times Iโ€™ve heard, โ€œWhy is your whole closet black?โ€ is too many to count. I donโ€™t even know where the desire to buy black clothing originated (maybe in that awkward middle school goth phase I hadโ€ฆ eek!), but either way Iโ€™m glad it did. As we all know, black will always be a staple color and in my own style, black will always be the new black.

I think the reason I love black so much is because it can encompass any style: goth, retro, vintage, rocker, classic and bohemian. I myself cannot limit myself to one style. Some days I take the classic approach and draw inspiration from icons such as Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn, while other days I look like I just walked out of the โ€™90s and I absolutely love it! However, my favorite style as of now is a more edgy and rebellious look. I mean, who wouldnโ€™t want to look like a modern day James Dean. Having different styles makes fashion even more fun. Itโ€™s almost like playing dress up except, together all these styles are YOU! Pretending I just came from a car hop in the โ€™50s, fashion brings me such happiness and hopefully Iโ€™ll be able to share this with you this summer.

So thereโ€™s a little bit about me and my style. I hope you enjoyed reading it and I look forward to sharing my thoughts with all you fashion lovers out there!!
