STYLE GURU BIO: Janiya Whittington

January 24th, 2017 at 2:00am

Hello everyone! Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Janiya but you can call me Jay. I am so excited to be a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. The spring semester is going to be amazing!

I was raised in both New York and Florida, so I get the best of both worlds. I attend Berkeley College where I study fashion merchandising and management. I am the CEO of the clothing brand, Motivated Jay, which I launched when I was 15 years old.

Personally, I believe fashion is a combination of expression, rebellion, art, and freedom. I love experimenting with looks that people don’t usually go for. I have always been into vibrant colors and bold patterns. I strive to be very versatile, where I can switch from a professional and classy look to vintage and youthful. I wear what I want no matter what anybody has to say. All women should! Women are free to express themselves thoroughly whenever they want.

I’m obsessed with nostalgia! I am constantly inspired by the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s. The fashion, the music, the films, and the culture was beautiful and rich of uniqueness. From Foxy Brown’s all red jumpsuit to Mya and Jay Z’s matching jersey set, it all has history in pop culture and fashion.

With this groovy look, I am wearing a velvet turtleneck, vest, high waisted black pants, and Dr. Martens. I’m in love with the turtleneck’s hue because it is very dynamic and brings out my beautiful melanin. Better yet, I found it at Goodwill for $6. SIX DOLLARS! I also purchased the vest at Goodwill, which was $5. FIVE DOLLARS! The vest has a gorgeous embroidered design on the back that I absolutely love. Go make a quick trip to your nearest thrift store. You’d be surprised at what gems you can find there!

I am grateful for this amazing opportunity with CollegeFashionista. I can’t wait to show you guys the outfits that slay me every day!
