STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Touch of Denim

Happy spring, Fashionistas/os! Spring is here and the weather is starting to warm up. The flowers are blooming and the sun is shining, which means it’s time to bring out the dresses, T-shirts, skirts and lightweight jackets. People are walking around more and going to places, such as Washington Square Park, to show off their spring street fashion. I found this Fashionista strolling across the park, enjoying a breezy afternoon after a long day in class.

This Fashionista brings attention to her outfit with a pop of color through her use of a long blue denim jacket. At Parsons, we learn to use material to our advantage to create a sense of distinct style and make a fashion statement. Instead of using a colored cotton shirt to create a contrast, this Fashionista used a blue denim jacket to really emphasize the contrasting colors and textures. She is able to retain the fashionable black-on-black look with a grungy vibe that is trendy within the New York City fashion scene, while incorporating some springtime elements in her outfit. It is also still somewhat breezy and chilly in the city, so this jacket helps keep her warm and her look weather-appropriate. This Fashionista wears a little black dress under her coat to keep with her minimalistic style. She adds a pair of black Mary Jane Dr. Martens shoes to complete her look.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK?: “I try to get a lot of basic, simple clothes. I mainly look for interesting colors and pair it with simple black and white to retain a minimalistic, but interesting New York City street style.”
