STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Not So Stuck in the Middle

Being caught in the middle of something is not typically a place people choose. Whether it be having to make a big decision, getting caught up in someone else’s argument or simply being stuck half-way through that long research paper due tomorrow, the middle seems to have become an infamous place in our lives. Unlike the first or last, the middle has no answer. There is no result that comes from being in the middle of anything, which can be confusing and likely why people seem to dread it so much.

Currently, we are stuck between the seasons of winter and spring. This is quite a strange time for our wardrobes; especially when you live in Michigan and it’s warm and sunny one day, then cold and snowy the next. Nonetheless, I am the middle of three sisters—my whole life has been about being in the middle. While this may come as some surprise, I’ve learned that being in the middle is not nearly as bad as people think. In fact, sometimes the middle is the best place to be.

Going from winter to spring is arguably the most difficult transition of all the seasons. Between the extreme temperature fluctuations and a mix of snow and rain in the forecast, the question of what to wear can often feel like it has no answer. Again, catching you right in the middle, which explains some of the unusual wardrobe choices we see these days. However, the middle doesn’t have to look like an awkward combination of shorts and a winter coat. Make the leap from winter to spring a fashion statement by slowly replacing one winter piece at a time with a fresh spring garment.

This first thing that caught my eye about this Fashionista’s ensemble was her jacket. It seemed to be a shortened version of a classic duster jacket, which was a trendy substitute for a winter parka. The rest of this outfit was kept very simple. Black leggings and a white T-shirt were brought to life by layering with a basic chambray shirt and muted golden scarf. This Fashionista completed her look with a pair of combat boots that were uniquely accented with plaid.

By swapping her heavy winter coat for a lightweight jacket, this Fashionista was able to create a look that kept her stylish while caught in the middle of winter and spring. It may seem too easy, but perhaps being in the middle doesn’t always have to be as complicated as we make it.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “When in doubt, just keep it simple. Layering under a spring jacket is always a great choice because you can remove them as the day gets warmer.”
