STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Birkenstocks, Your New Foot Fetish

July 9th, 2015 at 2:00am

If you ever had to walk more than 10 city blocks then you know where this is going. If you thought it was a good idea to walk to the other side of campus in your best pair of pumps for the career fair that one time, you probably wished for these and you definitely know where this is going. Don’t let the hype fool you anymore; there are such things as nice looking sandals that you can style in, as modeled by this Fashionista above, who commutes to and from Queens to her summer classes in the city.

She breaks it down for me—starting with her shoes of course, a pair of black leather Birkenstock sandals. I caught her walking out with an unbelievable look of freedom and relief rocking these bad boys. I assumed the look was drawn from being able to walk freely after sitting in a chair all morning. Turned out she had just aced her marketing exam, but nonetheless she was happy to share her outfit and latest shoe purchase with me. The product details include important words I recall hearing my grandmother stress about to me: breathable, durable and arch support. To the nights you spent wobbling home after the club at 5:00 a.m., or when that sorority event ran late, you owe it to yourself to read that last sentence again. You also have no choice but to stare at her feet as she draws you in with a fresh pedicure coated in a summery color by Essie.

She continues her getup with a flexible T-shirt styled with mesh stripes right below the neckline, bottomed with lightweight Ralph Lauren cargo shorts. For accessories, she assembles several simple pieces of jewelry by AUrate. She is wearing what you’d call a commuter’s summertime dream.

Whether you decide to go hunt down a pair of Birkenstocks of your own and end up finding the next best thing, just remember to go easy on your feet.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK?: “Opt for sandals that conform to your feet, with a neutral color, which will allow you match them with several different outfits.”
