STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: ’90s Patchwork

Hello again, Fashionistas! As we all know, major fashion trends tend to recycle themselves over the years. Conveniently, for us millennials, we can dig through our parents’ old wardrobe from the ’80s and ’90s to find exactly what we are looking for.

I passed this Fashionista walking through campus and had to capture her outfit. As simple as it is, her style screams the ’90s. She is wearing a floral patch overall skort. Yes, skorts are back and better than ever. She layers the denim overalls with a pastel pink crewneck to bring out the pink in the patchwork. Converse high tops are a great go-to shoe for any outfit that shows a little leg. Finally, she is carrying a faux leather backpack that completes her outfit.

If you want to recreate this trend and make it your own there is a few ways each Fashionista can put their own twist on it. Since the weather is only getting colder, wear full-length overalls instead and distress them. You can trim the bottom of the pants and make a DIY denim choker from what is left! If you don’t like overalls, find an oversized denim jacket and add some patchwork or pins to bring in color and detail. You can never go wrong with denim on denim, so wear jeans with a different shade of blue and a taupe colored T-shirt. One last way to take your average jeans to extraordinary is to add floral lace to the cuffed bottoms. Find some fabric that fits your style and sew it onto the rolled cuff of your jeans, this will take your outfit to a whole new level.

No matter what your style may be, anyone can bring the ’90s fad into their wardrobe. All it takes is a few patches, pins and fabric and you will be turning heads walking through campus!
