STYLE ADVICE: Master the Trends

As someone majoring in fashion, one of my favorite compliments is: “if anyone can pull that off, it’s you.” I’d like to think that in some sense, I am a trendsetter, always on the verge of the up-and-coming fashion trends. On the other end of the spectrum, I have amazingly creative friends that can pull off the most rad vintage looks. Either way, the goal is to be unique in our style. But what happens when those looks hit mainstream fashion?

There seems to be this stigma that if something is trendy, it’s no longer unique. However, fashion isn’t always about what you wear, but how you wear it. It’s about the way things make you feel. This Fashionista is wearing multiple trendy pieces in one look, including a choker necklace, velvet material, an off-the-shoulder style top, and over-the-knee boots. Individually these pieces are very trendy, but collectively they make for a unique outfit.

This Fashionista is cool, calm, and collected as she heads out for a night out on the town. She plays the velvet texture to her advantage, and when the sheen of the fabric catches the light, it intensifies the olive color of her top. Her over-the-knee boots are the perfect way to maintain the dressier aesthetic of her look, without the need for a heel. Lastly, her choker draws the eye upward, and creates the illusion of a secondary neckline beyond that of her top.

Trendy pieces may be mainstream, but fashion is what you make it. My style advice to you is don’t be afraid to wear trendy items! Mix them and match them as you please, and rock the look you create. In the end, it is your confidence that makes your look unique.
