Break It to Make It—Why Making Time For Yourself In College Is Important!

With the new school year in full swing, I’m sure that most of us are realizing just how much we have on our plate. With internships, jobs, a full course load and attempting to have a fun social life, it often seems like we don’t have enough time in the day.

While we always want to be on our grind and use the most of every minute, I’m here to tell you that the best way to make time for everything is to actually take a break.

Studies show that making time for yourself throughout the day will make you more productive and boost your creativity.

So with that being said, let’s all take a step away from our computers and phones for a second with these four ways to take a break.

1—Exercise. We all know the health benefits of exercising, but it’s just as good for your mind as it is your body. Grab a friend (possibly another Style Guru?) and hit up the gym, do some yoga, go on a run—whatever exercise works best for you! Just get out there and get those endorphins flowing.

2—Read a book. I mean a fun book; one that is stimulating and not a book that you are assigned for class. I would recommend one that will inspire you in whatever field it is that you are in.

3—Go to a coffee shop. There is something really wonderful about going to a coffee shop with no work to do and just sitting there, people watching. Try to find a new place and don’t go on your phone at all while you’re there (except of course, to get a good insta photo). This will allow you to unplug and truly connect to the world that is right in front of you.

4—Make some art. Take the time to create something not because you have to, but because you want to. I know that many of us work in creative fields, so we spend most of our days making things and that this might not seem like a break. But sometimes, it is nice to create something that’s not for a job, something that’s just for you!

Remember, that keeping up with your mental health is one of the most important things you should do for yourself. While we all love to work hard, it’s important to take a break!
