AROUND TOWN: Wolfgang

In a small town like Gainesville, it is hard to find clothing stores that are on the cutting edge of the latest styles. That is why when I found Wolfgang I praised the fashion gods. Wolfgang is a woman’s clothing store that carries the latest fashions from designers including Mink Pink, Somedays Lovin,’ Blank NYC, Motel, Love Sadie, Lush and many more. I caught up with the owner and buyer, Matthew Turner, to discuss what makes Wolfgang a beloved store in Gainesville.

Name: Matthew Turner

Role: Owner/Buyer

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe the style of Wolfgang?

Matthew Turner: Wolfgang’s style is always changing, but our goal is to provide our customers with something unique, affordable and flattering. We are the store you go to when you don’t want to go to the mall and when you want to go against the grain occasionally. When we launch our online store, we will probably be able to better showcase what our vision is.

CF: Where do you get most of your stock and what do you look for in the clothes you sell?

MT: We have carried brands from all over the world—Australia, Denmark, England, Brazil, Italy, Japan, USA—and we try very hard to find brands that fit into the idea of the store and will challenge our customers in a positive way to expand on their personal style. We do trade shows and buying trips across the country many times a year to ensure we are on top of things.

CF: What part about Wolfgang caters perfectly to the college demographic?

MT: We cater to that demographic intentionally based on our location and experience in Gainesville. Most of our staff members go to UF and a few are in sororities, so we keep our ears to the ground for emerging trends and for specific events in our customers lives like graduations, formals, spring break, etc.

CF: What are your favorite trends this season?

MT: For us it’s not so much the specific trends of the season, but what our clientele is into and willing to go for. In the past year or so, the “festival girl” trend has taken over and made a lot of other prominent trends in higher fashion somewhat obsolete. Personally, I’m a fan of the trend and think that there are a lot of really fun design aspects to it. However, like I said earlier, we always strive to push people to new places with regards to their individual style and enjoy helping people get to those new places. I’m excited to see what’s next. It’s easy to get bored with what’s in now because I’m surrounded by it constantly while buying for the store. Our customers have fantastic taste, class and style, so whatever it is, I’m sure it will be great.
