AROUND TOWN: Style In Revolt

For those college students who cannot afford going to New York Fashion Week, the best next thing is attending the annual spring fashion show on campus. Nevertheless just because it is not NYFW, does not mean that no effort and time goes into the show. Therefore, you may be wondering how the Fashion & Retail Society puts everything together. CollegeFashionista had the chance to interview to the president of the club, Jennifer Sun, on the making of the show and what to expect.

Name: Jennifer Sun

Role: Fashion & Retail Society President

CollegeFashionista: What was the first step in planning the Rad Fashion Show?

Jennifer Sun: The first step in planning the fashion show is logistical. The president needs to decide on an optimal date and venue around a year in advance and submit that request to the Northeastern scheduling office to secure a space. I would say the first “real” step after that is deciding the theme of the show. The executive board brainstorms ideas for around a month and then votes on a favorite and we move on from there!

CF: What is this year’s theme for the show? What was the inspiration behind the theme?

JS: Our show this year is ’60s-inspired! The show is called Style in Revolt because the ’60s was an era that broke many fashion traditions. For those not familiar for ’60s styles, think Mad Men clean cut suits for men and Twiggy with her mod, retro outfits for women. Our show will take these iconic looks and give it a more contemporary twist, you’ll see bohemian and punk looks as well! The ’60s had a lot of fun trends so the show really tries to encapsulate this energy and progressive attitude.

CF: What types of pre-show or post-show activities can attendees expect to take part in?

JS: We open the doors 30 minutes before the show starts and attendees can munch on free food, Georgetown Cupcakes and take pictures at our fun photo booth! There are no post-show activities attendees can take part of, unfortunately!

CF:  Can you tell me some of the designers or boutiques that will be providing clothes for the models?

JS: We get our clothes from a cool mix of designers. We have a good variety of student designers, local designers and big brand-name corporations. For example, a student designer we are featuring is Jasmine Chen. Local designers/boutiques we are featuring include KuDeTa for womenswear and Ministry of Supply for menswear. We also have clothes from Betsey Johnson and UsTrendy, which are well-established companies rather than individuals.

Learn More: The show will take place on Friday, April 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Fenway Center. Tickets are free and they are already up on myNEU so be sure to get yours today. Tickets always sell out fast!
