ALL IN THE DETAILS: Stay RAD With Plaid

Plaid: practical, layered, accenting, iconic, dapper—plaid literally spells out its versatility for you. From casual outfits to formal attire, the possibilities are endless when it comes to plaid apparel.

Plaid is one of the few patterns I suggest that every Fashionista/o should own. Next to cheetah print, plaid is one of the few patterns that can be worn in just about any part of your outfit. A plaid skirt can take you from a day in class to a night out on the town. Nonetheless, a plaid tie is a trend-savvy addition to any suit worthy occasion. However, my number one plaid must-have is a plaid button-up.

Contrasting a plain look with plaid detailing is the perfect way to add that extra oomph to any outfit. Today’s Fashionisto drew inspiration from his surroundings to do just that. Having grown up in Brooklyn, graffiti is one of the many art forms that foster this Fashionisto’s street style.

Much like fashion, graffiti allows the artist to use patterns, shapes and colors to express him or herself. The artists begin with a blank canvas and builds on their choice of elements to create their final masterpiece. Similarly, this Fashionisto began with a simple denim on denim ensemble and then added a plaid button-up around his waist for a subtle accent to his outfit. As a complement to his black jeans and dark blue denim shirt, he also accessorized with a slightly lighter blue necklace that stayed true to his deep blue color scheme.

Personally, my favorite part of this Fashionisto’s look is his sneakers. These Nike high-tops were the perfect combination of neon pinks and blues atop a grey and black silhouette. Though these sneakers really add to the overall outfit, his plaid button-up brought this look from street-wear to street style. Any Fashionista/o will find that a plaid button-up is an integral addition to their wardrobe.

How To: Looking for a RAD way to play up your otherwise monochromatic outfits this summer? Try throwing on a plaid button-up. Remember, if you’re not entirely confident with wearing plaid button-ups conventionally try styling it subtly. Throwing it around your waist or even wearing it unbuttoned is a simple way to take any outfit to the streets. So if you haven’t done so already, it’s time to get RAD with paid!
