ALL IN THE DETAILS: Patchwork It

The reason I fell in love with fashion was because of its ability to say so much about a person without even speaking the words. The best way to portray your personality or even your mood is simply through the combination of items you choose to make up your outfit of the day. If a picture is worth a thousand words, I’d say an outfit is worth a million.

One of the hot new trends taking the fashion world by storm is the use of patches that can be ironed onto clothing, most popularly, denim. Each patch is personal to the wearer in that it was hand-chosen and speaks to who they are. It highlights what I see as the best part of fashion—telling a story about yourself.

These patches seem to have become a form of communication amongst Fashionistas, and Virginia Tech’s campus is most definitely speaking the language. This Fashionista says her DIY patched denim top has become a staple in her wardrobe.

While still on the lookout for more patches to add to the collection, she started with a couple of her favorites. Her back right shoulder reads, “have a nice day,” a thoughtful gesture for those behind her making the trudge to class on a rough Monday morning. The front patch, showing off her spunky side, reads, “join your local girl gang,” a friendly reminder to stick together (you go, girls!)

She layered the denim top with a simple black tank underneath a plaid flannel for some color. Her black high-waisted jeans, a classic go-to, worked well with her white Adidas fashion sneakers. For some extra personality, this Fashionista popped some color around her neck with a faded pink bandana. With a look like this, this Fashionista patched up her Monday blues and added some spunk to her step!
