STYLE GURU STYLE: Springtime Stripes

The spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection by DKNY is certainly eye-catching. Everyone’s favorite spring colors give life to striking geometric patterns. Long skirts and boxy shirts give a modest and overall chic aesthetic. When I first saw the collection, I fell in love with the use of bold colored stripes for spring. Though one may argue that stripes are one of the most daunting patterns with their possibility to create a look that is very unflattering, when used properly, they can be a fun addition to any outfit. In the case of the DKNY collection, the bold patterns are strategically toned down by the use of lighter colors and additions of monochromatic pieces.

As I love a good challenge and in light of DKNY’s fantastic spring 2015 collection, I decided to put together an outfit using bold-colored stripes that is still flattering for every figure. On top, I wear a simple white three-quarter sleeve shirt. Adorning my feet are a pair of strappy heels and around my neck is a gold heart necklace. The pièce de résistance of the entire look is a Roxy mid-length skirt, which is striped with thin lines of orange and lavender. I opted for vertical as opposed to horizontal stripes because they virtually elongate the body instead of widen it.

Patterns, especially stripes, can definitely be scary to deal with on clothing. However, this does not mean that we should be avoiding them. DKNY’s spring collection is a perfect example of how patterns can be used in the correct balance to create looks that are fun, streamlined and stylish. Spring is a time to be bright and bold, so go for it!
