STYLE GURU STYLE: Winter White

After the temperature drops and the first snowflakes fall to the ground, it’s easy to get into a fashion slump consisting of leggings, sweaters and boots. This typical winter wardrobe is cozy and comfortable. It’s no wonder the moment we emerge from our beds on a chilly morning we gravitate towards the warmest clothes we can find rather than a cute outfit. Eventually, choosing an outfit becomes looking through piles of black leggings and sweaters trying to decipher which option is the best.

Even though it’s long after labor day, we don’t have to reject the color white and only wear dark colors. Winter whites are one of my favorite ways to brighten up your wardrobe without having to go out and buy a bunch of colored sweaters and tops.

I chose to incorporate white in a subtle way for this snowy afternoon. I started with a knit white sweater as the base for my outfit. I paired my white sweater with a black, suede mini skirt complete with fringe details. This skirt is like wearing a party around your waist, not to mention the fabric is so warm and comfortable. A skirt in a unique fabric is one of the best ways to get out of your winter rut when jeans and leggings start to get old.

Over-the-knee boots are another way to get out of wearing pants in the winter. They’re just as warm as putting on an over-worn pair of leggings, but so much cuter. They pair perfectly with a mini skirt to help balance out the differing lengths in freezing temperatures. I accessorized my look with a pom-pom hat and layered choker. I chose an ivory-colored hat with a fur pom-pom because when wearing winter whites, it’s not always best to choose an entirely stark white outfit. Instead, mix creams and whites together to add some dimension to your look. I also put on a pair of mirrored sunglasses and a layered rhinestone choker to dress up my otherwise casual look.

One thing is for sure: if you wear white in the winter, you don’t have to blend into the snow.
