STYLE GURU STYLE: Trends on Trends

Religiously following current fashion trends has always been a big part of my life, evolving my own style. I love to experiment and when a new fad is spreading throughout the fashion scene, I am quick to try out whatever the new craze may be. I normally discover fresh trends from celebrity street style. The celebrities effortless looks inspire me to create my own personalized outfits, targeting the specific trend I strive to make a statement with.

An “in” piece I chose to work my outfit around, are a pair of fishnets tights. Madonna sported these revealing tights back in the ’80s and set them as a popular trend during the decade. The legwear is making a major comeback, and it is being worn in countless creative ways. Today’s take on the stockings range from, being worn under faded ripped jeans or matched with graphic band T-shirts. Total rock ‘n’ roll vibes. I decided to go with a look I have recently seen being worn by models such as Haley Baldwin and Binx Walton; fishnet tights, under a T-shirt dress.

The oversized T-shirt is thrifted and cut into a V-neck, leaving the collar of the shirt. I frequently find myself cutting up old clothes as an inexpensive way to keep up with the thriving world of fashion. I aimed for a deep V cut on the top so I could show off my charcoal bralette, a feminine touch to the edgy look. Like the T-shirt, the oversized jean jacket is another thrifted piece that adds some versatility to the mainly black outfit. For shoes, I went with high black boots to avoid an overwhelming exposure of fishnet. Lastly, I amped up the outfit with layering gold necklaces, a beaded choker combined with a long drop necklace.

Fashion is about originality and how you choose to express yourself to the world. I have always been obsessed with creating my own personal style that reflects who I am on the inside. I am constantly on the look out for upcoming trends but also love vintage pieces. You can frequently find me rummaging through the racks at my local thrift store, looking for old pieces I can make new again. My trendy/alternative style is inspired by young fashion icons such as Zendaya, Kendall Jenner, and Vanessa Hudgens. However, I always find a way to alter their looks with a personal touch of my own. I am currently a sophomore at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, majoring in Journalism. Stay stylin' xx.
