STYLE GURU STYLE: Plaid and Tan Go Hand in Hand

When Marilyn Monroe said, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world,” she definitely knew a thing or two about fashion. The perfect pair of shoes, a statement I credit to Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City, are my favorite aspect of any outfit. The color and fit of a pair of shoes gives character to the simplest of outfits. For me, the dreary fall weather and frequent rainy days in Charleston make it hard to motivate myself to rock a heeled bootie. The moment I saw these blush ankle boots online, I knew I’d force myself to style them up because they were a must-have.

Whether its dreary or sunny outside, these boots have taken me to class, work and out on the town. Even though I was originally concerned about the rounded toe of the boot, I literally haven’t taken these babies off. I paired the tan booties with the Better Than Sunday Playsuit to add a feminine appeal, in order to contrast the boxiness of the outfit. The playsuit style is one that I’ve become fully favorable to, as the Charleston weather has not quite caught onto the fall pant season yet. Wearing it at this time in October is a definite challenge with the humidity here, but the plaid trench coat is a fundamental outerwear detail for fall.

Influenced by the Stella McCartney spring 2016 ready-to-wear Paris runway collection, her use of bold head to toe plaid patterns made me want to put together a similar look. I used the plaid pattern as a statement piece against the simple black romper, similarly to how she used solid colors to contrast her plaids. The chic pattern can be worn casually over boyfriend jeans or styled up over a classic slip dress. Plaid is a definite must-have detail in achieving that head-turning fall wardrobe.

It’s important to find fall styles that can last through the season, like a staple pair of booties or a statement jacket that can pull an outfit together at any point in time. As we head toward colder weather, be on the lookout for your essential wardrobe go-to, whether that’s a pair of boots or a daring plaid dress.

Get My Look: 1. A simple black slip. 2. Any plaid coat. 3. Tan booties.
