STYLE GURU BIO: Megan Zelasko

Hey there! Some people call me Megs or Meggie, and some people call me Little Z, but most just call me by my full name Megan. I am thrilled to start this internship with CollegeFashionista. I love writing, I love taking photos and I love fashion. What better way to spend my time than by doing something that combines all three?

I live in a tiny town just on the outskirts of Chicago, or as we like to call it, Chiberia. Growing up so close to the Northwest side of the city paved the way for awesome experiences. I consider myself a true city girl and cannot picture myself living anywhere other than a renowned city when I get older. With that being said, I found myself going to college at Kent State University, which is about 50 minutes away from the nearest city and is surrounded by cornfields. At this point you are probably asking yourself, how did this self-proclaimed city dweller end up in such a rural area? Well the answer is simple; it is because of fashion.

In elementary school I was probably the least likely candidate to study fashion, but I really did love it. I realized my love of fashion once I was in high school. I went to a private Catholic high school where plaid skirts, knee-high socks and button-down blouses ruled the halls. Being restricted to a school uniform is part of why I love fashion today and why I chose to study Fashion Design in college. After long talks with mom and dad, and a lot of research, I chose Kent State as my new home for the next four years. It has an amazing fashion program that grows bigger each year, and a nicer price tag compared to the other schools I was considering. Studying fashion has allowed me to zone in on who I am and how I can express that in my clothes. My personal style is feminine and classic, but with modern touches. However, every now and then I like to throw in a ‘70s-inspired tunic, or a grunge plaid flannel just to keep it interesting. Presently, my favorite items include Steve Madden sandals, and a graphic T-shirt from Zara.

I believe in the effect fashion has on people and in its ability to be the ultimate statement maker. Fashion is always changing, but guess what…so are we. Our only job is to make sure our fashion changes in tune with us. My ultimate goal is to empower people, to help them make statements and to help them express who they are through one simple, creative outlet: fashion.
