STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: So Easy, Just Slip-On

A new year calls for new style footwear, and while high-tops are on the rise, the slip-on sneaker, a rehashed ’90s trend, seems to be hanging on just as tight. Although the slip-on sneaker originally was the go-to for skate boarders, grunge-lovers and a more punk rock crowd, it’s most recently been embraced by the hautest of couture influences today. From high end designers such as Prada and Miu Miu to contemporary designers like Micheal Kors and VINCE, the slip-on shoe has taken off with a bang. Retailers alike, such as Zara and H&M, are stepping in as well, creating their own version for Fashionistas on a budget. It’s clear that this notable style is having more than just a moment.

Besides the ease of use factor, slip-ons can be stylish in more ways than one. They’re the epitome of versatile; dress them down with any type of denim from distressed boyfriend jeans to super skinnies to tapered trousers for a street style edge, or dress them up with a shift dress, a midi-skirt or even a shorter flared skirt for a girl’s night out!

Worried about looking stumpy with the flat sole? Have no fear! Focus on styles with shorter hemlines, and partially tuck in your top to add more structure to the look. If you’re looking to show off your legs, go for a pair with a low contrast in color against your skin tone. If you’re wearing boyfriend jeans, try rolling them up a couple notches, and go for a pair with neutral or earthy tones. If you’re looking to stand out, go for a bright pattern or metallic pair that is sure to “bring it” every time!

Take note from this Fashionista who went for the pointy version with the metallic toe cap. Although her look is mainly neutrals, she knows how to keep it red hot! A graphic T-shirt and black zipped ankle skinnies will always be classic. Complemented by her dainty initial necklaces, blue leather band bracelets, silver band rings, Marc Jacobs laptop bag, Céline purse and her forever timeless Michele watch—this stylish lady is the epitome of style.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Between school and my internship, I’m constantly running around, so comfort in my ensemble is an essential. I’m keen on balancing neutrals with stand out pieces whether it’s these bright colored slip-ons or a stand out accessory. I gravitate towards pieces that can become staples in my closet, and I save the splurging for items like shoes or jeans where the quality and fit can make all the difference.”
