Style Advice of the Week

There is no doubt that at every fashion show and every upscale event, there are always those individuals who attempt the one trend that many people are afraid to try: mixing patterns. While it is a fun trend to try, with style icons such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Whitney Port showing off their fearless mix of animal prints and basic patterns throughout Fashion Week, being too fearless can ultimately lead to ending up as that week’s Worst Dressed on Entertainment Weekly’s Fashion Police. In other words, there are a few rules that must be followed to create an effortlessly chic look that will have other Fashionistas wanting to play around with their own pattern palettes.

One way to pull off the trend is by pairing a neutral print with a bolder one. If you are still a little iffy about the whole mixing-patterns fad, wearing an earthy toned tank with brightly colored printed pants is a great way to try it out. This will also allow you to place focus on one particular item in your ensemble while the other subtle pattern supports it.

Another way to mix prints is by combining pieces with similar hues. This Fashionista did just that with her unique mix-and-match look. She sports a beautiful red plaid coat and complements it with a fun leopard print tote that happens to have bright red straps, which blend in perfectly. By wearing one similar color in two different pieces, this Fashionista makes two great items go together like peanut butter and jelly.
