STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Don’t Sweat It

Style Advice of the Week

It’s no secret that college students are notorious for having a more—how shall we put this?—casual way of dressing. However, it’s also clear that the word “casual” has lost its meaning over time and continues to get more and more drastic to the point where what we consider to be casual actually looks a bit more careless. It’s an unfortunate fact, but we have managed to take casual clothes to a whole new level by making sweatpants and sweatshirts the campus uniform for college girls and guys alike.

Do not fret, though, my fellow Fashionistas/os, because there is still hope for casualwear, and that hope lies partly in the essence of sweaters.

When I saw this Fashionista in class, I was immediately drawn to her red and white striped sweater (which she later informed me she refers to as her “Where’s Waldo sweater”). In a sea of sweatshirt-clad students, a bold sweater always serves as a polished take on casualwear. One of the wonderful things about sweaters is their extensive ability to look good with practically anything. In this case, this Fashionista wore her sweater with a classic pair of skinny jeans and brown riding boots, which is a perfectly functional and cute look for any college girl scurrying about to classes on a snowy day. However, she could easily take that same sweater and pair it with a cute skirt and a statement necklace for a gathering with friends. The versatility of a good sweater is one of the things that makes it an excellent basic to stock up on.

Even with winter ending in a couple months, it’s never too late to invest in sweaters and they actually serve as an excellent transition piece on those days when it’s too warm for a coat but too chilly to walk around with something that doesn’t have at least a little bit of bulk. Madewell always carries an awesome selection of bold sweaters, and this one from Forever 21 is incredibly adorable and can be worn with practically anything. If you’re looking for a sweater with a bit more edge, try this ombré sweater with gold detailing from Urban Outfitters.

So, keep in mind the importance of a basic sweater and all its possibilities for the duration of the winter season, and consider making your casual look a little less clumsy and a little more classic.
