BEAUTY BAR: Wild Waves

Wouldn’t it be great if you could simply wake up with hair that was all ready for the day? Hair can be a struggle to style; I know this all too well from many years of testing all sorts of different products ranging from special conditioners to various brands of flat irons. This Fashionista has naturally wavy (and beautiful) hair, but there are some tricks to get this look without taking hours of your morning–and your sleep–away.

I only occasionally go through this process now because my hair is a bit too short to always achieve the desired outcome, but when I had longer hair it was my daily go-to! I would simply shower before bed, distribute leave-in conditioner throughout my hair, air dry it just a bit and put it into two French braids. When I would wake up and undo the braids I’d have a head full of wavy hair. To keep the waves in place, a small amount of hairspray would do the trick.

To achieve her specific look, this Fashionista used her natural waves as a base for styling her hair and then proceeded to touch up certain areas with a Conair styling wand. Over the past few years, I have personally developed a stronger liking for curling wands over typical curling irons. They seem to result in better-looking curls that last longer and that awkward hair “dent” that sometimes comes from curling irons is nonexistent. After using the wand, she used Sheer Set hairspray by Garnier Fructis to keep the waves in place and add some volume at the roots. This hairspray works great because it holds hair where it needs to stay without that crunchy feeling we all hate. The end result? She has wonderfully wild waves!

The outfit this Fashionista wears helps her blonde hair stand out because of its neutral colors and lack of detail, which can be distracting if the desired focus is the hair. Since it’s now officially fall, it’s time to pull out those riding boots and sweaters! Thankfully, the weather here in Tennessee is finally getting cool so these fall pieces are definitely acceptable. She wears a cream-colored scoop-neck sweater, a black faux fur vest, a pair of dark wash skinny jeans and quilted black riding boots. All of these pieces are extremely versatile; they can each be worn with a variety of other fall pieces.

When you want to keep the focus on your hair, whether it’s done in an elaborate style or a relatively easy one like these waves, be sure to keep your outfit simple. Things like too much jewelry and crazy patterns have the power to shift the focus away. A favorite quote of mine from Leonardo da Vinci says, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” and this look is a perfect representation of that.
