AROUND TOWN: Zipped Magazine

Since its launch, Zipped Magazine has set out to connect Syracuse University students with the latest trends and critical issues in the fashion community. Before social media, the print magazine published once a semester was enough to fulfill this mission. With all the changes in who’s a part of the fashion conversation and the explosion of social media, Zipped is shifting gears to be a part of the conversation and keep students informed on the latest in fashion, beauty and more.

Name: Erica Hewins

Role: Editor-in-chief

CollegeFashionista: Where do you see your role as EIC with both a print and digital brand like Zipped?

Erica Hewins: It’s important for me to keep the connection between both the print and digital to make sure they’re promoting the same ideas. Having both teams on the same page is crucial. And that can be challenging, they’re two separate entities so I have to communicate clearly between the two of them so everything runs smoothly. As editor-in-chief, my role is just as much about leading teams as it is about fashion and beauty.

CF: Could you describe your personal style and name your must-have spring trends?

EH: I would describe my style right now as boho-chic. I’ve always loved the bohemian style because it allows me to be stylish while also being casual and comfortable. That’s important because like many college students, I’m busy. So I have to wear what will be comfortable all day and night. The spring trend I’m really into is the gladiator sandal. My next purchase is definitely going to be the knee-high version. One of the trends I see coming, that I will also be on the look-out for in stores are small handbags. They’re simple and very ladylike. I also dig the fringe that’s everywheredresses, bags, shirts, skirts—it’s all over and I’m loving it.

CF: How do you keep up with fashion news?

EH: Magazines and blogs are my favorite ways to stay informed about fashion and beauty. I like being able to physically flip through the pages. I have subscriptions to W, Vogue, InStyle and Harpers Bazaar. I also look at blogs weekly, and during each Fashion Week I look at them hourly!

CF: What has been your favorite part since joining Zipped Magazine?

EH: This semester as the editor-in-chief has definitely been my favorite. I love working with the entire Zipped team. They’re amazingly talented and creative and it’s fun working with people who get excited about their work, and who really care about the magazine. This is a huge year for Zipped because for the first time we’re rebranding and revamping. It’s going in a much different creative direction. Starting with this issue, it will be much more than just a fashion magazine.
