AROUND TOWN: Adrian de Banville

When you attend school in one of the poshest neighborhoods of the fashion capital of the world, it is hard not to be influenced by style. So, of course, there is a fashion and style club, L’Ivresse (French for intoxication) on Sciences Po’s campus that caters to the fashionable and studious set. I caught up with the club’s President to get the scoop on the intoxication with la mode.

Name: Adrian de Banville

Role: President, L’Ivresse

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe the club L’Ivresse?

Adrian de Banville: L’Ivresse was founded in 2011. It’s a fashion society, which means we focus on fashion and the fashion industry. We also have other interests such as contemporary arts and the luxury business as a whole. We try to avoid being too elitist because that’s something we have been criticized for before. We do different activities throughout the year, such as clothing sales. We have a street style blog, and we try bring fashion to the people. We try to make people aware that it doesn’t matter if they are extremely fashion literate or if they just have a casual interest, they are welcome to join the club.

CF: How would you describe the style at Sciences Po?

ADB: Sciences Po doesn’t exactly have a style. It did before when it was a really elite school, there were a lot of boys in suits and really bourgeois girls in little jackets and skirts. But that’s cliché and that’s the past. Today, Sciences Po has opened itself to the world. There are a lot of people coming from different places all around the globe. I think that with this huge mix, you can’t properly define the Sciences Po style. We’ve got the anarchist who dress like they do care, the Parisian girls who are always stylish and we have guys who dress pretty nicely with suits paired with nice socks and other small details.

CF: Describe your position in L’Ivresse.

ADB: I am the president of the club, so I basically lead [the club], along with three other people. I hold meetings, try to get people to participate in everything, which is not always easy because we are, after all, a university focused on social sciences and not a business school. I think it is easier to have a fashion society at a business school, but we do our best. Some people at Sciences Po are just curious about everything and we take advantage of that and try to offer as many different activities as possible.

CF: Do you see yourself pursuing a career in the fashion industry?

ADB: Yes! Absolutely! I’m a guy that is interested in a lot of things, but I do know for now at least that I want to work in the fashion industry. It is a decision that I have taken over four years ago and I think it’s going to stick. For now, I’m interested in the communications and PR world of fashion, but that may change.
