ALL IN THE DETAILS: Mixing Patterns

Hello my lovely Fashionistas and Fashionistos! With the sun shining bright it’s time to start experimenting with clothes. Mixing patterns can be risky business, but it can also be super rewarding and can create a unique outfit. It takes practice and practice makes perfect so don’t be afraid to experiment! Mixing patterns is fun this time of year because it is easy to do with spring and summer clothes since they are very colorful and full of patterns.

This outfit is a perfect example of mixing patterns in small ways. The details make the outfit to be honest and that is what makes it so intriguing. The shirt is the main focal point with the simple black and white dots. The purple pants are perfect by bringing a solid pattern in and a pop of color. When mixing patterns you always need to have at least one solid in the outfit. Too many patterns creates too busy of an outfit with too much to look at.

The details are what really make the outfit exciting! The shoes have got to be my favorite part of the whole ensemble. The floral goes really well with the purple pants, but also complements the dots on the shirt. You need one cohesive color throughout the outfit when mixing patterns so there is a sense of fluency throughout and people can see how the whole outfit works together. The ring and necklace add to that sense of fluency by bringing in another element from the shoes to the outfit just through color. The orange is not only reflected in the ring but also in the shoes and the purple from the necklace is in the pants and the shoes.

How To: This is can be a tricky thing to do but with a few tips anyone can pull it off! Like I said above you need to have on solid whether it be the shirt or the pants and it should be colorful. Start mixing patterns in small ways whether it be a headband or shoes with a shirt that has pattern to it. Keep colors cohesive! This is key when mixing patterns, you need to be able to have the same colors in each pattern that you have in your outfit. If they do not match then it looks like too much. Follow these simple tips and you’ll be a pro at mixing patterns in no time.
