One of my heroes ever since I’ve been a kid is the cartoon character Ash Ketchum. His aspiration is to be the very best, like no one ever was, by catching all the Pokémon, mythical creatures with superpowers, in the world. Although his goals are slightly different from my own, to be able to follow is his footsteps is a dream come true. On this day, I was able to do just that. With the camera as my Pokéball (creature catching machine) and this subject as my Pokémon, for that brief second, I was Ash.
I found this girl wandering the streets while playing Pokémon GO, a location-based augmented reality game created by Niantic that lets users see these invisible monsters. The immense popularity of this game has inspired groups of people to dress as Pokémon and form groups dedicated to finding the rarest ones, and this girl happened to be the leader of the pack. Her shirt was homemade, a simple Gildan blank with felt attachments to spice it up. I was told it takes the form of the electric Pokémon, Elekid, a Pokémon whose personality she felt was similar to her own.
Her shoes are adidas Superstars, perfect for all the walking you will do while egg-hatching. As you can see by their beat-up nature, this girl has been walking quite a bit lately, no doubt due to the buddy system feature Pokémon GO just launched.
This fit is perfect for playing Pokémon GO. Expressing herself by wearing her favorite Pokémon on her chest signaled that she was indeed a Pokémon GO fan and as a result, dozens flocked to her in hopes of guidance.
