WHAT TO WEAR: Back to School

April 1st, 2015 at 2:00am

As we bid farewell to Spring Break 2015 and return to campus, we must step back into our routines with a fresh look. For some of us, that entails showing off the tans that accompany lounging beachside in Aruba or revealing our latest splurge from Neiman Marcus. Either route, the first day back should be treated as a runway—especially with the 70-degree weather that has graced Atlanta.

Color coordination was the main factor that drew me to these Fashionistas’ outfits. Their clothes match but in a way that allows for their personal styles to shine through. In a way, they reminded me of Serena Van Der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf from the New York-centric Gossip Girl. Throughout the run of the series, Serena was known for her sporty-chic outfits while Blair dressed in clothing that made it clear she was a member of Manhattan’s elite on the Upper East Side. Discovering these Emory embodiments of one of my favorite television duos certainly brightened my day, just as much as the spring sunshine.

For the Fashionista on the left’s sporty look, I have to admit something that I never thought I would come to terms with: Navy and black can go together. Should they be paired together in moderation? Yes, but it is necessary to break the rules at times to make groundbreaking discoveries. The juxtaposition between the navy blue of her blouse and cardigan and her black skinny jeans and slip-on sneakers helps onlookers appreciate each aspect of her outfit. Plus, the pattern play between her backpack adds a nice touch.

While her friend breaks the rules (and with good purpose), the Fashionista on the right stays true to classic couture by skillfully pairing this skater skirt with a jewel-toned top that displays the same shade of blue as her skirt. A pair of booties complete her look, and—like her friend’s slip-ons—will ensure that they arrive to class on time and in comfort. This will help alleviate some of the back-to-school blues that result after playing queen of the Aruban sands.

One Simple Change: You just got back from break and now you have an interview lined up for that summer internship with a local designer. Good for you! If you opt for the Fashionista on the left’s sporty style, trade that cardigan for a navy blazer. However, if you decide to go for the Fashionista on the right’s classic look, trade the booties for a pair of kitten toe heels.
