What To Consider Before Getting A Tattoo

In recent years, tattoos have become more popular and acceptable. Tattoos have always been something that I’ve been really intrigued by. Every tattoo is different and they carry unique meaning to those who get them. There are several reasons as to why someone would want to get a tattoo (including no reason at all).

I personally have two tattoos. I never thought that I would be someone that would get tatted up, but when my mom passed away I knew I wanted something of hers to treasure forever. Although I knew I wanted to get a tattoo there were so many things I knew I needed to think about before I should get something permanently etched on my body.

Here are somethings that I took into consideration before I got tatted up:

1—“What do I get?”

Although this may seem like the easiest thing, it’s not. It actually took me a while to figure out exactly what I wanted to get. Looking up tattoo ideas on Pinterest and Tumblr can be fun and inspirational though! Occasionally I will get called out on my tattoos being “basic.” But always remember that not matter how ordinary or ornate, your tattoo holds a meaning to you and that is all that matters. 2—“Where should I place it?”

I’m sure we’ve all heard that tattoos can be really painful and believe me they can. But don’t let that scare you away. There are certain areas on your body that can be really painful to get a tattoo like your back (where your spine is), collarbone and ribs. There are other areas though that are a little less painful like your thigh or wrist. Placement is a painful and permanent decision so choose wisely! (Photo via @emilyciavattaa)

3—“Where should I go?”

Research the best tattoo places in your area. It’s best to look into the artist and their work to know if you can trust them to give you exactly what you want.(Photo via @n_agem)

4. “Who should I bring with?”

Don’t go alone to get a tattoo, especially if it is your first one. Even if you’re not nervous at first, once you sit down and see the artist’s tools, the nerves will start to set in. I brought a whole group of my friends for support and holding two hands is better than one if you ask me. (Photo via @n_agem)

5—“What if I don’t like the initial design?”

It’s your body so take control and get all the information you need. One of my tattoos I had the artist scan a letter my mom had written for her handwriting and I had him resize it three different times. Don’t feel bad for asking to fix anything; it’s your body and you’re getting a tattoo that will be on your body for a lifetime.
