STYLE GURU STYLE: Two Pieces Are Better Than One

As fall approaches, so does fall fashion. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean all summer trends have to fade. One of my favorite trends that can be interpreted into an outfit any season is the two-piece. The trend of the two-piece can give any casual or dressed-up look an edge, as proven by the alice + olivia pre-fall 2015 show. This show interested me because it not only incorporated vintage ‘70s fashion trends such as bell bottoms and bold patterns, but it also modernized that look with turtlenecks, statement necklaces and, of course, matching tops and skirts. I love that the line’s designer, Stacey Bendet, could use a few simple pieces to create such a bold effect.

Taking inspiration from the collection, I paired a classic button-down brown skirt with a cropped black turtleneck. I added my own bit of personal style by opting for a shorter skirt than used in the collection, and a shift towards more earth-toned colors that channel fall, too. The different textures of the top and skirt I chose also give off a similar ‘70s vibe by creating an interesting visual. To make the look appear even more ‘70s-inspired, I decided to add a pair of black platform sandals to go with the outfit. The sandals are both a good decision to wear as summer weather is still winding down, and because they help me look taller, which is obviously just as (if not more) important.

This outfit is simple, yet edgy and eye-catching thanks to the combination of a few pieces.

Get My Look: 1. A turtleneck crop top. 2. A circle skirt. 3. Platform sandals.
