STYLE GURU STYLE: Tomboy Chic

Growing up, I was never much of a girly girl. Building forts in the woods with my brothers or going to soccer practice always sounded more enticing than playing with Barbies or dressing up like a princess. As I’ve matured over the years, I’ve gained an appreciation for typical girly things, such as getting my nails done or going to the mall for fun. At the same time, I’ve maintained my affinity for the “manlier” things in life, which has translated into an appreciation from men’s fashion. That’s why 6397’s pre-fall 2015 collection really resonates with me and inspired me to experiment with some new outfit combinations.

Filled with loose boyfriend jeans, oversized jackets and graphic T-shirts that say “Rad” on them, this line is perfect for the casual tomboy in all of us. 6397 designer Stella Ishii specializes in basic, boyish pieces without decoration or frilly details, and denim is her area of expertise. The brand’s clothes are effortlessly slouchy without being unflattering, which is right up my alley.

When deciding what to wear for a lunch date with my mom, I kept Ishii’s simple ideals in mind and ultimately decided on this laid back, menswear-inspired look. My loose white button-down paired perfectly with my trusty pair of American Eagle Outfitters blue jeans. One can never go wrong with the classic white shirt and blue jeans combo; whether you’re on the beach or going to a casual dinner, it’s a timeless duo that always has your back on those days when you just can’t decide what to wear.

When picking out footwear for this outfit, I took a cue from 6397’s models and opted for my favorite pair of Converse, as all of them wore Vans shoes for the collection’s photo shoot. Although I was tempted to throw on a patterned headband or statement necklace to spice up this otherwise plain outfit, I decided to go against my natural tendencies and allowed the outfit to speak for itself. I had to remind myself that sometimes simple is better and that loading on accessories can often take away from the natural beauty of an outfit.

With her pre-fall 2015 line, Ishii proved that it’s possible to achieve a chic menswear-inspired outfit without having to actually shop in the men’s department of a store. If you don’t have the guts to venture into the men’s section to shop for yourself, there are perfectly suitable pieces in most women’s stores to help you land an equally killer tomboyish look. Search for items like crisp button-downs, structured jackets, loosely fitting shirts or jogger pants. When properly executed, boyish outfits are stylish and give you a nice break from that one sundress you’ve worn to one too many Sunday brunches.
