If you haven’t seen fluffy volumes of silhouette built from tulle in recent runway shows, you probably haven’t been paying attention. The latest dressy craze—which I would consider my personal favorite fashion trend this season—is the tulle skirt. It’s fun, elegant and voluminous, and the whimsicality of a princess-inspired skirt is pretty much priceless if you ask me.
As seen in Badgley Mischka’s spring 2015 show, tulle is used to create shape and movement to a garment. Badgley Mischka’s show featured skirts of all lengths in different colors and textures that all used tulle to boost them up—literally. However, the biggest way in which I have seen this creation come to life in terms of street style is in the tulle midi skirt. Falling just above the knee, these flouncy frocks are undeniably elegant and feminine due to the shape and texture of the tulle.
In my attempt to sparkle and flounce in my own midi tulle skirt, I chose to stick to muted colors in order to avoid looking flashy or over-the-top. In my gray multi-layered tulle midi, I would’ve felt like a princess no matter what else I wore. I paired it with a long sleeve black cropped top, maintaining a modest amount of coverage to complement the midi length skirt.
To continue the polished, modern-fairytale look, I threw on a pair of strappy black heels, which are simultaneously classically elegant and modernly chic. I finished off my dressy ensemble with lots of sparkly jewelry, including two rings and oversized studs, both echoing only the silver and black tones of the outfit. Lastly, I left my hair looking relaxed and tousled, in order to dress down the classy elegance of the midi paired with the heels. All dressed up and ready to go, I felt graceful, classy and sophisticated. The tulle midi might’ve reminded me of my ballet tutu days, but it ultimately transformed me into the sophisticated professional Fashionista/ballerina/princess I’ve always wanted to be.
