STYLE GURU STYLE: Preppy Patterns

The classic and timeless houndstooth print has been a staple in my wardrobe since I can remember. The houndstooth pattern is a small-checkered pattern with notched corners usually done in a black and white. It is named houndstooth, because the notched corners are meant to resemble a canine’s tooth. Cheetah and leopard are not the only animals that influence fashion!

During the Ermanno Scervino fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection Scervino featured this preppy print with a twist. While the houndstooth pattern is usually associated with coats and capes Scervino choose to utilize it with skirts and dresses. Instead of using only one heavily printed piece for a outfit he opted to layer patterned coats over pattern dresses creating depth in his outfits. Another twist to the classic print was his use of the small, tiny pattern. Scervino chose to enlarge the checkers creating an abstract motif yet still recognizable. This unique pattern was showcased on one of my favorite dresses from the collection, which was a unique take on the houndstooth pattern.

For this look, Scervino inspired me as well as Blair Waldorf who wore this print multiple times on Gossip Girl minus the headband of course! I chose a classic coat in a houndstooth pattern paired with a simple black circle skirt. To enhance the preppy look I choose a silk muted blue blouse with a white necktie for contrast. Finally, I chose to keep my heels and hair bow black for a simple and polished look. A pop of color was added by using a pale pink purse. By keeping the majority of the outfit black it allowed the coat to stand out.

This outfit works great during the late part of summer during the transition period from warm days to chilly nights. Simply throw on a coat after dinner for a stroll around the city. While it is a little dressier than the normal outfit it is prefect for date night or meeting the parents. Do not be afraid of patterns! They easily add interest to any outfit.
