STYLE GURU STYLE: Pop of Blue

There is nothing I love more about spring and summer than the bright and bold colors I see as I walk around campus. Once the flowers start to bloom, we see a transition in people’s outfits as they replace their winter wardrobes with pastels and bright colors that reflect the sunny and incredibly hot weather. As I was sifting through my wardrobe, trying to find the perfect outfit for the one sunny day in Texas since April, the spring/summer 2015 menswear collection from Dsquared² influenced my look. Andy Warhol’s use of bright colors and unique graphics in his artwork inspired this collection from Dan and Dean Caten.

Colors like white and black, as well as neutral tones, were used to bring out the pops of colors that were found in blazers, shirts, pants and shoes. I went through my closet and found a blue button-down shirt that I had never worn before and a pair of white jeans that would make the blue stand out even more without overwhelming the look. The shoes were a difficult choice, but in the end I went with a black pair in order to keep the blue button-down as the main pop of color for my outfit.

It is easy to be tempted to wear a variety of cool pastels or bright colors all in the same outfit; however, fight this urge! An outfit will look more chic and put together if you find one color you want to base your look around. You must simplify the use of color in order to maximize the overall look of an outfit. Also, do not forget the amazing ability individual pieces like a pastel blazer or even a floral pair of shoes can do to enhance a plain outfit.

This week, add a pop of color to your outfit, and balance it with white, black or neutral tones.
