STYLE GURU STYLE: Leather Syndrome

Leather is something we all love, whether it be faux or authentic. It was first identified as a “bad boy” fashion staple which was seen in classic films such as Grease, Fight Club, Top Gun, etc. Aside from being worn by Hollywood bad boys, it was also worn by rockstars and bikers, so it wasn’t so popular among the general public. Fast forward to the new millennium and leather is now a must-have essential in everyone’s wardrobe. In 3.1 Phillip Lim’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection, the first thing that caught my eye was the leather that frequently made appearances throughout majority of the ensembles. Lim uses the leather to create a feminine yet masculine vibe (Phillip knows me too well; menswear is so RAD).

Combined with my obsession for leather and my undying love for menswear, I was inspired to go for a leather jacket on top of an extra large white button-up shirt (courtesy of my dad’s closet). I chose to wear the button-up as a dress with the sleeves carelessly folded for a “careless” look. I then paired it up with a pair of red Nike SB Zoom Stefan Janoski canvas shoes, which I love so much due to how comfy they are. I also chose the shoes to add a pop of color to my ensemble. When deciding on my accessories, I made sure I chose pieces that wouldn’t clash with the outfit. They included a felt black fedora, a leather Barada black cross-body bag, hoop earrings, some midi rings and a silver cuff necklace.

Leather is amazing simply because of its versatility. It can be worn anywhere; it just depends on the look you’re going for. Although it’s quite thick and the heat waves are currently coming through, there are so many ways to wear your leather. So just be smart and remember there are no dos and don’ts when it comes to looking fabulous.
