STYLE GURU STYLE: Grunge It Out

Leather jackets and accents of plaid together make the perfect grunge look. 3.1 Philip Lim’s autumn/winter 2015-16 ready-to-wear line is all about this look. His collection features mostly black and white outfits with accents of red. He also incorporates patterns and textured fabrics to help give each outfit a different vibe. Many of his pieces in this collection had leather accents paired with plaid underneath. This is where the inspiration for my outfit came.

The leather jacket that I am wearing is very chic, with a quilting pattern along the sides and shoulder. This pattern gives the jacket an edgier vibe, going along with the grunge look I was going for. I incorporated a plaid shirt underneath my jacket, similarly to Lim’s collection.

My red scarf acts as the accent color for my outfit and ties the overall look together. As for shoes, they incorporate two different textures of leather and fur. The fur ads to the edginess of my outfit and the pointed toe gives it an unexpected look.

Grunge can be hard to pull off, but the key is not to mix too many prints and colors. Black is the main color for this particular trend so try incorporating different black fabrics and textures into your outfit. Don’t be afraid to be bold! As for accessories, keep them minimal so they do not take away from the outfit. Don’t be afraid to pair certain pieces together, layering and mixing of pieces is bold, yet when planned out leave a lasting impression.
