STYLE GURU STYLE: Finding Your Visual Relief

When I think back to a few of my favorite fashion shows in the last year, Givenchy’s spring 2015 menswear show earns a spot near the top of my list. It was at this show in particular that I could see a lot of my own values when it comes to style. The common theme of the show was very minimalistic color, balance, simple patterns and a few elements unique to the personal preference of Riccardo Tisci. Amidst the harsh blacks, whites and grays, Tisci adds a form of visual relief through the embodiment of his favorite flower, baby’s breath.

The beauty of the visual relief in this particular collection is that the baby’s breath pattern is unique only to Tisci. My advice to you is to pick a minimalistic outfit and find your own unique visual relief. With the recent warmer weather in Bloomington, I decided to wear a thin sweater paired with some of my favorite denim. The beauty of an outfit as simple as this is that it gave me the freedom to choose to put my own twist on the outfit. My visual relief was not a baby’s breath pattern in my outfit, but a pair of black and red Nike Air Jordan 1s from 2001. These particular shoes are my holy grail. They are representative of my own personal style and provide a little variation amidst a very minimalistic outfit, similar to the baby’s breath pattern providing relief to the very structured colors of the Givenchy collection.

Get My Look: 1. Oversized sweater or sweatshirt. 2. A pair of jeans. 3. Your favorite pair of sneakers.
