STYLE GURU STYLE: Beach Waves and Bandanas

June 10th, 2015 at 2:00am

June is finally here! Summer is getting closer and the days are getting hotter. Generally, the beautiful weather calls for fun in the sun and summer means days filled with tanning, hiking, floating in the pool and brunch…lots of brunch!

Even though there’s so much to do this time of year, luckily not every date calls for an extensive beauty routine. Most summer activities are laid-back and fun, so it’s the perfect chance to let your style reflect just that. The alice + olivia pre-fall 2015 collection pulled me in immediately with the ’70s-inspired pieces and hair. The tousled waves combined with loose, airy garments screamed summer comfort to me. I made this look into my own; however, by going with the simplicity of all-black instead of bright, bold colors and also chose to add one of my favorite hair accessories, introduced to me by one of my style icons Jessie James Decker.

I’ve found that beach waves are not only popular, but fairly low-maintenance as they allow you to have summer hair without the knots, frizz and windblown mess. It’s the perfect kind of messy and just enough to bring the beach to you, even if you’re sitting by a baby pool in the city. Styling your hair this way also gives you a lot of versatility —my favorite part of any routine! With this style you can add as much or as little volume to the root as you’d like. Plus, depending on the curling wand’s barrel size, you can choose the size of your wave. Whether you like to brush it out immediately or let it fall throughout the day, there are tons of routes to take so you simply can’t go wrong.

A great addition to the “beachy” look includes trying a bandana as pairing the two together is not only super cute, but will help keep your hair back out of your face. The cloth material makes for a comfy alternative to a hat, while coming in a million different colors, patterns and styles. When sitting outside all day with the sun beating down on you, it’s important to be mindful of your scalp by wearing a bigger bandana or headscarf can save you from spending the next few days itching away at burnt red skin.

Beach waves will always be my go-to look. I’ll even admit it, I don’t just save it for summer, I rock it all year long. For the Fashionistas who haven’t given this look a try, I highly encourage you to give it a spin—literally, with your wand.
