STYLE GURU STYLE: All-White After Labor Day

Labor Day is a holiday that most Americans aren’t sure what they are celebrating, but are sure to take full advantage of the three-day weekend. Labor Day is the last celebration of summer filled with backyard barbeques, beach trips and music festivals. Most schools, universities and K-12 alike, go back in session following this weekend if they haven’t already commenced.

This day also holds a place on the fashion calendar, as the age old saying goes, “No white after Labor Day.” No one’s sure exactly where this mandate came from, but it’s recognized that Labor Day is the official end to summer, and white is regarded as a summer color. But have you ever heard of a winter white? If done right, you can continue to wear white after the start of September and anytime throughout the year for that matter.

To prove my point, I’ve dressed in white from head to toe. My shirt is a new favorite I purchased this summer in Burano, a small island off the coast of Venice which is known for their handmade lace. Walking down the vibrantly colored streets you see little, old women in rocking chairs making lace the traditional way as if it’s no big deal. I fell in love with this blouse when I saw it not only for its lace, but also the hand beading. All of this weights it down and makes it quite heavy, but it still appears light and floaty.

On the bottom, I have a pair of American Eagle Outfitters white skinny jeans. If you don’t already own a pair, you should. I’ve completed my look with gold accessories from my shoes to my necklace and sunglasses. To top it all off, why not throw on a floppy straw hat  to complement the gold and add another touch of white?

If dressing monochromatic from head to toe is too much for you, that’s okay! But like I said, you can wear white after Labor Day in my book.
