STYLE GURU STYLE: ’90s Grunge

Alexander Wang has always been my holy grail for runway style inspo. In all honesty, I’ve never been much of a runway style follower and tend to be more of a bubble up theorist; except when it comes to Mr. Wang.  His collections scream originality and undeniably ooze cool girl style. This year, Wang’s pre-fall 2016 collection focuses on the ever reoccurring ’90s grunge style trend. With its moto jackets, clunky heels and slip dresses, it’s hard not to see the connection.

Now, instead of copying one of his looks I decided to throw my own spin on it. I incorporated the moto but played off the shiny fabrics used in his collection by throwing on a velvet crop top. The look needed something to really give it that ’90s feel, so I added a straight skinny jean, buying it purposefully baggy to makes sure the “I-don’t-care-if-this-looks-good-but-you-know-it-totally-does” grunge attitude shows. Finally, I added white converse for an effortless look and to give the look a visual gradient from the shoulders down.

As for accessories, I kept it simple. Red Dior cat eye sunglasses for a pop of colour and a double arrow head silver ring.

Whenever you’re in doubt about a style trend, take a gander at Alexander Wang. He’s always sure to give it a new spin. Also, make sure that you’re being true to you. Don’t try to copy a trend just because it’s on the runway. Give it a little bit of your own flare and make it work for you!
