STYLE GURU BIO: Sam Gilbert

Hi everyone! I’m Sam, and I’m so excited to be joining the CollegeFashionista family this fall semester as a Style Guru. I’m a junior at Rutgers University, where I’m majoring in Journalism and minoring in Art History and Digital Communication.

Now to address my seemingly questionable choice to minor in art history, here’s the first thing you need to know about me: I am infatuated with art. I love photography, paintings, architecture, film, all of the things that contribute to society’s art and culture, both previous and current. I’ve always felt that art tells a story and that fashion is one of the best art forms that does so.

Fashion is amazing to me because it can bring people together, but also allows individuals to stand out. Everyone has their own sense of fashion, and their sense of fashion contributes to their story. Fashion constantly evolves at a rate nearly impossible to keep up with and I think that we can say the same of ourselves (especially at this time in our lives).

My style is eclectic. One day I’m feeling like a tomboy in a muscle tee and boyfriend jeans, and the next I’m dressed up in a black t-shirt dress and my favorite Jeffrey Campbell platform booties. One staple that remains consistent is my color choice, which usually stays within the realm of white/gray/black. For this outfit, I stuck to a gray long-sleeve T-shirt with a cape-like back and twisted front, paired with my favorite, comfortable ruffled cotton shorts. For me, the statement aspect of this go-to outfit is the Topshop shoes, which play off of the black slip on trend and add a little high top and snakeskin action. As much as I love black, I equally love patterns like snakeskin and camouflage (soon to come).

During my time with CollegeFashionista, I hope to scope out the inspiring looks that pop up around my diverse campus, to curate the walking art I find and above all, to tell a story.
