STYLE GURU BIO: Julia Sanchez

Hello, everyone! My name is Julia Sanchez and I am a student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I am studying Theatre with a focus on Performance and I am pursuing a Communications minor. This is my first semester as a Style Guru and I could not be more excited to get started!

I have been living in Charlotte for the past 15 years so I pretty much consider myself a native. Living and attending school in a major city has definitely influenced my sense of style. Charlotte really is a mixing pot with so many people coming from all sorts of backgrounds and places; so, even walking to class I am exposed to many different styles and trends.

Whether it’s through nail art or writing, I have always loved to express myself artistically. Fashion, in particular, has always been a huge expressive outlet in my life. In elementary school, while other kids were playing outside or riding bikes, I was inside trying on my mom’s dresses and awkwardly tottering around in her high heels. And though I have definitely made some mistakes along the way (hello there, gauchos and pink furry vests) my style has evolved into something I am proud of. I have always loved unique clothing items and never shy away from taking fashion risks. I firmly believe that if you wear something with confidence and a smile, you can never go wrong.

Lately, I have derived inspiration from fellow bloggers, vintage stores and magazines. As a broke college student, I know the importance of saving money and have become exceptionally good at being able to recreate looks at a fraction of the cost. I, admittedly, have been known to scour clearance racks, sale racks and thrift stores to score the perfect deal. Sure, it may take a little while longer, but now I have an extra 15 bucks to put towards a pair of crazy expensive, but irresistibly fierce, Chloé shoes I have had my eye on.

For my outfit I really wanted to focus on basics. I choose a summer staple, a classic black maxi skirt, but with a little bit of a twist. The asymmetrical draping is a perfect way to spice up a basic outfit and to modestly show a little skin. I paired it with a simple denim button-down and a fun pair of nude, studded heels. Since the outfit is so neutral I had a lot of fun mixing and matching statement rings and necklaces to really give the outfit a vibrant pop.

With summer finally here I cannot wait to start meeting other Fashionistas/os and share their unique style and personality. Remember to check back every Wednesday to discover them with me!
