STYLE GURU BIO: Julia Dearing

I feel like I should start this off by mentioning I’ve never been terribly good at writing about myself (is anyone really?), so bare with me a bit here. My name is Julia Dearing and I am currently a junior at Indiana University studying editorial fashion arts, a major I created through my school’s Individualized Major Program.

If you’re wondering where the whole fashion thing started for me, I should probably take you all the way back to my first word – shoe. I think after my parents (disappointedly) heard me spit that one out, they knew they were in for some trouble. I created my first fashion blog when I was only a sophomore in high school and from there grew to not only love the world of fashion, but also the world of writing. I’m a firm believer in the power of self-expression through fashion and media and found joy in putting what inspires me out into the world in hopes of inspiring others.

Throughout the years my style has kind of been a roller coaster. While I’d like to say I’ve always been the Style Guru I am now, I have to admit I have my fair share of embarrassingly-tacky styles to look back on, including an atrocious pair of floral frames that still haunt me to this day (yikes). Thankfully as the years went by, I found my style and have even developed a kind of uniform for myself.

I’m all about minimal, casual, and cool, which makes dressing as a college student fairly easy. I’m not much of an accessories gal and keep my looks fairly simple, so throwing something on in the morning takes me about ten minutes tops. Unless of course I wake up deciding everything I own is terrible, and I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about.

I’m a big denim and sneaker girl, so about 95% of my looks are based around that. I’m also super down with comfort and prefer loose oversized clothing to tight styles any day. On a typical morning I wake up and throw on a pair of ripped jeans, a band tee, white sneakers, and a leather or denim jacket depending on the weather. I’m not joking when I say that I can go through a whole week wearing 7 different versions of that look. I’m a little bit of a hoarder when it comes to rock-tees and ripped jeans. However, a T-shirt dress and a little oversized denim is also a pretty regular look for me.

While fashion takes up a big part of my life, you’ll typically find me at the gym, binge watching crime shows, or stalking foodie accounts on Instagram.

I’m so excited to have joined the Guru Gang and I cannot wait for all of the fashionable things in store this semester!
