STYLE GURU BIO: Hayley Roukin

My name is Hayley and I’m obsessed with fashion, beauty and New York City. I’ve always been into fashion and beauty. I started using makeup when I was only five years old! Mind you, it was bright blue eyeshadow (classic) but hey, you have to start somewhere, right?

Anyway, some of my favorite trends are the jean jackets and high waisted anything—whether it’s skirts, jeans or leggings! I also am very big into the black on black look. As they say, “Women who wear black, lead colorful lives.” I am a firm believer in that saying.

As we know, the ’90s are making a comeback. With the leg warmers, the off-the-shoulder shirts or the high-waisted pants, there’s no denying that we are revisiting the past with today’s trends. This look features denim jackets and denim on denim which, to be honest, I usually cannot stand. Whenever I see denim on denim I think of that one picture of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in 2000. However, I do absolutely love the casual look of denim jackets.

Whether it’s a night out with friends or you’re going to class, the jean jacket is a great addition to any outfit. Personally, I love wearing tank tops or T-shirts with black jeans, and a pair of sneakers with the jean jacket. To make this look a little nicer, you can pair it with booties or heels. Or, if you want to be on the more casual side (because, let’s be honest, we all just want to be comfy), it still looks great with sweatpants or leggings!

Shopping for a denim jacket won’t break the bank. I got mine on clearance from PacSun and I have several other name brand jackets from Goodwill or the Salvation Army. I like to get my jackets a little oversized so you can layer zip-ups or hoodies underneath (which is definitely a good look).

Overall, the denim jacket is very much a staple piece. It can go with almost any outfit during most seasons. It’s trendy and has been popular for several decades. I’ve been a fan of the denim jacket since I was in middle school and my mom has her own too! So, do yourself a favor and go to your local thrift store and pick out your own, perfect denim jacket.
