STYLE GURU BIO: Gabrielle Lawson

Welcome everyone, “Wah Gwan.”

This is how Jamaicans greet their neighbours in passing, with a hearty “Wah Gwan,” meaning “What’s going on?” Staying true to my culture, I would like to extend a warm hand and welcome you into my humble virtual wardrobe here at CollegeFashionista.

My name is Gabrielle Lawson, but you may call me Fab Gab.

I am a true island fruit—born and bred in “sweet sweet” Jamaica—who hasn’t fallen far from her cultural tree and is strongly influenced by her Caribbean roots. I am a rising sophomore at Boston University for the fall 2015 semester, on track to major at the Questrom School of Business and a minor at the School of Communications.

While academia is my priority, I have learned to feel at home in a foreign country by using fashion as an outlet for expression and communication. My passion is as simple as being well put together at all times whether I dress sporty chic or business “smart” casual. Overall, my style is quite laid back. I often find myself grabbing staples such as the Little Black Dress (LBD) or a jean jacket. I am a sucker for staples because I enjoy jazzing up a simple ensemble with a statement piece.

This outfit exemplifies my vogue, simple and sophisticated. I have chosen an oversized black and white striped T-shirt dress and a pair of Nike ‘Blazer Mid Leather’ sneakers as the foundation of my casual look. To spruce things up, I added gold accessories: a rose gold and silicone watch from Michael Kors complemented by a pair of Alex and Ani bracelets and a chunky J.Crew necklace to pop the collar. On the way out the door, to run errands, I grabbed my sleek leather ‘Shopper Tote‘ by Zara to complete the outfit.

Living in the age of social media take-over, Instagram and Youtube have unsurprisingly been a major reference for my fashion inspiration. Shirley B. Eniang and Amrezy are two influential social media personalities whose styles have seeped into my closet. I consult with Shirley for day-to-day looks and hit up Amrezy when it’s time to turn on my glam. Both ladies have got me hooked on neutrals and loving the monochrome outfit trend for this spring/summer.

As we explore my closet over this semester, my wardrobe and fashion interests will be presented in my weekly articles every Thursday. Gear up for a fun-filled tour. Be prepared to take the streets with me, to scout out other Fashionistas like myself who are willing to give us a snippet of their spring/summer style. Do not hesitate to stop me along the way by leaving comments and please feel free to borrow my looks; that’s what they’re here for.

Until next time, “walk good” (take care of yourself).
