STYLE GURU BIO: Elle Chen

Hey again, Fashionistas and Fashionistos! Can you believe school is starting again? Where has this summer even gone?! They say time flies when you’re having fun, but this summer has taught me that time definitely moves fastest when you’re constantly combating jet-lag. I’ve had the great fortune of getting to travel across the country and across the world this summer – from Bar Harbor to San Francisco to London to Stockholm – and be a part of the CollegeFashionista family the whole way as an editorial intern.

But after spending this past summer on the editing side of things, I’m excited to be back on the ground this semester, reporting in with the latest trends and gossip from Rutgers University. While I’m going to miss my faux jet-setter adventures, I’m ridiculously excited for junior year and everything that being back on campus means. From moving out of the residence halls and into our own apartment (Rent! Bills! Responsibilities, oh my!) to syllabus week barbecues to football games in sunshine and rain to, yes, classes, it’s time to put away my Osprey and continue my Rutgers experience.

That experience, of course, wouldn’t be complete without the people I share it with – my fellow Rutgers classmates—and the talents and personalities they bring to our university. Rutgers is only growing in both size and strength, giving each and every one of us more opportunities to meet new and fascinating people, and giving me the chance to bring you all a sense of Rutgers’ personal style.

I’ll start by bringing you some of my favorite pieces in my closet right now. You’ve heard it maybe too many times this summer, but there is no denying that boyfriends jeans are the must-have item of the season. Perhaps the most practical way to wear pants in the summer, these slouchy, laid-back jeans are the skinny jean’s first major competitor in years. Equally as popular are wool or felt hats, so be prepared to see far more of these as the cooler months roll around. From camouflaging a bad hair day to being that je-ne-sais-quoi that ties an outfit together, these hats are a 21st century girl’s best friend. And as always, my closet wouldn’t be complete without piles on piles of high heels. Stark detailing and chunky, utilitarian silhouettes are majorly in right now due to our rampant nostalgia for the ’90s, so take advantage of the trend and pick up some comfortable, wearable and towering platform sandals.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to figure out how to fit all of these shoes into my new closet. Catch you on the flip-side, RU.
