STYLE GURU BIO: Elizabeth Valoon

Hi everyone! My name is Elizabeth Valoon, and I’m a radio-television-film major at the University of Texas at Austin with a minor in English. I’m very excited to be delving into the world of fashion! As a film student I always find myself not only noticing the clothing chosen for movies but also being inspired by them.

As a kid I always loved making people laugh and smile so it only made sense when I became a theatre student in high school and a film student in college. I love acting, writing, photography and being creative in general, which is part of the reason why I’ve come to really love fashion. It took me a long time to be comfortable “dressing up” or “dressing cute” as I was a soccer-playing tomboy growing up, but now I really enjoy it.

It’s difficult for me to pin down my own “style” because I feel that it changes all the time. Since I come from an acting background, I love using fashion as a way to express myself. As cheesy as that sounds, it’s true! Some days I’ll be wearing a rocker T-shirt with black converse, and other days I’ll be wearing a pink dress with poofy socks! I will say I have found myself wearing the latter a lot more lately, though. The short, pink, floral dress I recently purchased is very comfortable for the hot, summer, Texas heat.

Last summer I became obsessed with the show The Carrie Diaries, an ’80s prequel to Sex and the City. All of the outfits were so beautiful and colorful that it inspired me to start wearing more pink lipsticks! Carrie’s big, funky ‘80s sunglasses inspired me to get a similar gold pair of my own as well. I’ve also been re-watching a lot of ‘80s John Hughes films and binge-watching The Mindy Project, both of which have very fun, spunky and colorful fashion styles that I’ve fallen in love with.

Since high school I haven’t been able to go without a pair of white Keds in my closet. I also love gold, so I’m glad my new shades match my far more dainty, gold, pearl necklace. I’m a fan of pretty, subtle jewelry, though my children’s One Direction wristwatch begs to differ. These days, I also think phone cases can be a part of your look! Friends is one of my favorite television shows of all time, so my “Monica’s purple apartment door” phone case and my denim shirt add a hint of ’90s to my look.

I’m very excited to be a part of the CollegeFashionista Style Guru team this summer, and I hope you look forward to reading my articles about the beautiful Fashionistas in Austin, Texas!
